Cafe Concert No 2 for 2007 is also a great success!
by philip (17th December 07)
Wendy Oakes introduced the concert briefly and it began with the flute quartet playing "Melody from Orpheus" and "Dance from the Nutcracker Suite". The quartet, consisting of Lea D'Augello, Cindy Abbey, Wendy Waddell and Vicki Prewett, entertained the audience with some very sweet melodies and can be happy with their performance and the audience's response.

This was followed by VCE student (and GVCO member!) Claire Freeman, who played the 3rd and 4th movements of a Concertino by Tartini. Her performance was very accomplished, which is just as well, because her exam is only a couple of weeks away! She received much deserved applause, as did Sharon Leppard, who accompanied Claire with her usual artistic flair and applomb.

The String Quartet, Ruth Dodson, Alison Smith, Carol McGregor and Demi Hase performed the slightly daunting (because of its exposed sections for all instruments) "Molly on the Shore", and then all three movements of the very listenable, Violetta Quartet. This was their first performance as a quartet, even though most of them have played in the orchestra for quite some time, and their performance was enjoyed by all.

Next, Renee Rankin sang beautifully, accompanied by Sharon Leppard, "Cry Me a River" and "I Dreamed a Dream." She has a very sweet voice and she put a great deal of expression into her performance, which was much appreciated by the people listening.

Following Renee were the Wind Trio, Carolyn Leslie, bassoon, Claire Freeman, clarinet and Cindy Abbey, flute, who played all three movements of Mozart's Divertimento No. 1. It was interesting as an audience member to hear the variety of the different groups, and in the trio it was good to be able to pick out the individual lines of the different instruments and also to hear such different sounding instruments blend so successfully. They can be justly proud of their efforts.

Natasha Prewett played 'cello next, accompanied brilliantly by Graeme Brewer, the "Variations on Judas Macabbeus" by Beethoven. Natasha played accurately and very musically all twelve variations and received loud applause for her efforts. She and Graeme combined beautifully for close on ten minutes of music making.

The final item in a concert which lasted an hour and twenty five minutes was the Wind Sextet. Carolyn Leslie, bassoon, Claire Freeman, clarinet, Vicki Prewett, Wendy Waddell, Cindy Abbey and Lea D'Augello on flute played some very appealing melodies in "Themes from the Magic Flute".

The whole concert was another success. Thanks must go to Wendy Oakes for coming up with the concept of these concerts and for her fortitude in following through with their organisation. She gives many musicians the opportunity to perform in a convivial atmosphere and benefits those in the community who come to listen to the variety of music that is provided.

Thanks must also go, of course, to all the performers, without whose work we would not have such entertaining concerts!
