Ryan Meeking and GVCO collaboration a great success
by philip (13th March 10)
GVCO and Ryan Meeking and the Few's concert at Westside Performing Arts Centre on March 11th has been a success on many levels. Firstly it was a great example of local people getting together on a community level to rehearse something worthwhile for the participants as well as the audience members. It required the skills of a number of leaders in the community to allow it to proceed and succeed. Ryan and his band members had to make the time to commit to a number of rehearsals with the orchestra, despite a busy touring schedule. They also had to work with Tricia Sargant in getting the best arrangements possible of the three songs to be accompanied by the orchestra, ARROW, THUNDER WITHOUT LIGHTNING, and SHE SAID. And of course it all had to be held together by our very talented and dedicated conductor and director, Wendy Oakes.

When you add in the challenges of getting a balanced sound between the band and the orchestra in the venue, it required patience and dedication from all the orchestra members as well, not to mention all the backstage, lighting and sound crews. And the supper provided by Geoff and Kerry Jennings for the performers was a highlight, too, just another example of people working in order to enhance the quality of the experience for all concerned.

So it truly has been a big community effort.

But it was a success, not just from a collaborative point of view, but also from an audience point of view. Many audience members complimented the orchestra on the quality of their performance, even though they primarily went to see Ryan - and the reverse was the case, too - and of course, having an audience of 400+, a virtual sellout in Westside, which only seats 420, is an added bonus.

The band were pleased that much of the audience stayed after the concert for CD signings for quite some time, and the orchestra gained many friends as well, from an audience, many of whom saw the orchestra perform in its own right, for the first time..
